External webcam not working in Monterey

It appears pretty well established throughout various forums that macOS Monterey is not overly compatible with external webcams for certain applications. I.e. What works? Zoom does, Photo does, etc. What doesn't work? MS Teams, Facetime.

If you're like me and use your M1 mac air in clamshell mode, you need an external webcam. I'm using a Logitech C920 Pro and C615. Latest drivers, both encounter the same issue.

This was not an issue with Big Sur as I understand it. It was recognised in the BETA version of Monterey but not fixed before deploying. I'm not faced with downgrading back into Big Sur or earlier. OR, Apple get back to me (us) on when this issue will be fixed??

I'm having a nearly identical issue with a Logitech C525 HD Webcam. I have a Dell U3419W monitor with built-in USB switch, and the camera is plugged directly into the monitor. It works (with Amazon Chime) after I reboot and before my Macbook goes to sleep. After the Macbook wakes from sleep, however, it reports my webcam as not connected, or "blocked by my browser".

Here's my update. I had my Logitech C615 connected through a Tripp-Lite hub. I also had an external monitor plugged in through the hub using the HDMI connection. The monitor worked fine all the time, but the webcam would get forgotten until I rebooted. So I bought a cheap USB-C to USB adapter on Amazon and am now using that as a direct connection for the webcam. The webcam is now recognized consistently when I use Zoom, but not when I open FaceTime. I don't use FaceTime on my laptop so I haven't looked into changing any settings, but I am so happy that it now works with Zoom.

None of this makes any sense to me and I hope Apple fixes it.

I have the same problem too. Logitech web cam worked fine for years on all other OSX versions. Stopped working on Monterey.

The camera looses connection after the Mac has been to sleep. Only way to get it back is to restart in clamshell mode with camera attached.

Tried other ways to restore camera, including restart with clamshell open. Restart with detached cam and re-attaching. Restarting VCDAssistant. None of these work.

This is Logitech's point of view regarding the webcam issue. The latest statement from their side (March 15) is: "Please be informed that we have yet to release webcam software that is compatible with the new macOS 12 Monterey operating system at this time. We encourage patience as an update is worked on, but I personally do not have an estimated date to expect a release for such an update. "

Hi All

As the original poster I thought it's worth now updating you after a 2 full meeting packed business days - including all the usual running around with the laptop in and out of clamshell mode - the new Monterey 12.3 update has fixed the issue.

It's just out.. so get on it if still experiencing the fault.

Cheers for the support.

The same thing happened to me with my new Mac Mini M! My generic UHD camera worked well with my 2014 mini on Big Sur but when upgraded to Monterey I was only getting the top half of the Face Time frame. When I received the new Mini M1, Photobooth, Zoom and even Camera in Parallels /Windows 11 Pro worked beautifully but not Facetime. However, If I started Photobooth first when Facetime opened, I could see myself. However, when I made a Facetime call the person being called could not see me though thy could hear me

I opted to do a downgrade to Big Sur. Install my applications and data and do a complete time machine backup. Then I did the upgrade to Monterey hoping that since the camera was being recognized in Big Sur, it would carry on to Monterey.

Needless to say, that did not happen. Once again facetime could not locate video camera. Being frustrated, I immediately downgraded back to Big Sur and with my Time Machine back I am now in a position where I have complete functionality.

This is common issue for users requiring an external cam for Monterey. I don't why this can't be patched. I'm content to use Big Sur until they can get his worked out.

No. For me there is no change with MacOS 12.3. My UVC webcam is still not woking (Connected to the LG monitor hub) using a MacBookPro M1 or iMac 2020.

Why is every great new MacOS system destroying standard features??? USB API? (all usb-sharing software is broken now since years), sleep problems with bluetooth devices and now the usage of USB standard devices. Actually the hardware is much better than the software. But I am using Apple products because of the software!!! It is really annoying :-(

Hello,

Referring to your message...

"Also, the Canon EOS webcam utility works on Monterey (I use it with a Canon EOS RP). The Canon camera utility works with Zoom..."

Doesn't look like mine works with Canon EOS RP in Zoom on MacOS 12.1 Monterey. It used to work just on MacOS 11 (BigSur). Can you please re-confirm exactly how it works for you? Thank you very muck.
