Games not taking input from Xbox controller with macOS Monterey

Hi.

I'm experiencing a strange behavior concerning the usage of an Xbox controller on my MacBook Air M1 with Monterey. Let me explain it.

I grabbed an Xbox controller from a friend of mine. Everything went fine, from pairing to using it in some games (Creaks from Apple Arcade and some games in an Amiga emulator).

Then I bought a new one (for Xbox X|S), and paired ok. I downloaded another game from Arcade (Spire Blast) and I was able to play. But games that I played with the old controller (Creaks, games in the Amiga emulator) don't work anymore, they seem not recognizing the new controller. I checked, the controller was perfectly paired and worked flawlessly (https://gamepad-tester.com/). Only Spire Blast keeps on getting along with it. I tried downloading other games from Arcade, but with no luck.

It seems as if there's some conflict somewhere with the controller I used before. Or I really don't know what is happening and what I can do. I tried many times removing the controller and pairing it again. Or rebooting the Mac. Nothing changed. The only thing I didn't try is removing and installing again not working games.

Any help?

Thank you

Luca

Hi merlinapple.

I contacted the Apple Support but they declared they cannot help because according to us it's a fault of the controller.

Unfortunately it doesn't seems so.

It seems instead a matter of incompatibility between MacOS and the controller's latest firmware, sort of. The controller that I originally tried and that was ok stopped working (and started behaving exactly like my controller) once it has been updated to the latest firmware.

I tried a third controller (old version like the former, with Micro USB port) with updated firmware, and it doesn't work too.

Finally my controller works fine if connected with iPhone.

Must be honest, I'm quite upset with such a situation, an advertised compatibility which is actually fully broken.

Let me add I'm not alone:

The very same issue with BigSur, which isn't promising at all.

Is there any possibility that someone at Apple Support takes care of this case?

Bye.

Just to add few more pieces of info. I had the chance to pick the former controller once again, and everything went fine. Same games, same setup, the new controller is like not recognised my most of them -- quite strange, as I wrote, only one game works ok. I updated the FW on my controller but nothing changed.

Difference between two controllers: mine is with the share button (so the newer one), while the one from the friend of mine is without (so it's older).

It's like my controller suffers from some sort of incompatibility, but what? And why it's only within games, while the gamepad tester web app (my original post) picks all inputs?

Bye

Luca
