Apple watch wrist detection

I just got a new Apple watch 7. I have wrist detection turned on but when it's on my wrist it keeps locking. The only way for it to not lock is to turn off wrist detection. It's not suppose to keep locking when it's on your wrist, only when you take it off. I went to the Apple store and the person told me it's suppose to keep locking if wrist detection is on? But my wife's doesn't do that and in the description for that option it says wrist detection locks your watch when you are not wearing it. Even sometimes in the middle of using it, it locks itself. Any ideas what to try?
