Magsafe II charger will light up and charge similar macbook air. It will not light up when plugged into 'dead' macbook air. Charging ports are clean. Tried to reset SMC, no avail.

If the steps in this Apple article don't help, then you have some hardware issue with the laptop that will need to be repaired. Have Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider examine the laptop to provide you with a repair estimate.

Sometimes you need to reseat the Magsafe connector a few times or even wiggle it a little bit. Is there any damage to the case around the Magsafe port as that may prevent the charger from seating correctly since there is very little clearance?
