Why I cannot complete transfer to new iphone ?

Yesterday I completed succesfully transfer on my iPhone 8 Plus to new iPhone 13 - using automatic transfer.

Today I'm trying to do the same now from my son's iPhone 7 to my (old) iPhone 8 Plus completely erased.

Tha process made me waste my time for over an hour, but now for some reason, the iPhone 7 went shut down (even though it was connected !) So now I'm being prompted to get the two-factor which does NOT work, because my son has a Mexican phone number since 5 months, and obviously it cannot work. I am stucked with new iPhone 8 prompting me to get the old iPhone closer !! (it's at less than 1 inch!!)... This is a total mess.

Everything seemed to work fine for over an hour, I really don't know what to do at this stage.

Michelle T18,

thank you for your reply. As my trial with the normal way failed, I decided to go old fashion, that is, backing up old phone on my Mac, then re-installing on new IPhone. That way seemed to me safer than going through another frustration in case iCloud or « update Apple ID settings » end up wasting my time after another hour or so…

In any case anyone would eventually need to do such a process after moving to another country and suddenly having Apple paranoid on « your behalf » even though you’ve been in that new place with same iPhones for a year, this is the process I would recommend. In apparence longer, but if I had proceeded this way in the first place, I would have saved 2-3 hours lost.

Hi lanstrad1,

Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities. We understand you're trying to Quick Start to transfer data from one phone to another, and we'd like to assist. Just to confirm, are these the steps you're following?

Use Quick Start to transfer data to a new iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If those steps aren't working for you, we recommend using iCloud to transfer the data instead. Here's how:

Use iCloud to transfer data from your previous iOS or iPadOS device to your new iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Take care.
