iTunes not allowing me to add downloaded songs

I have the windows edition of the app, and I have version 12.12.2.2. There is no "check for updates" button I can find. I am trying to add songs to my library but they simply are not adding. I have tried dragging and dropping and clicking the "add file" option. I have restarted my computer as well with no change. I have even tried opening my file explorer > select the song > right click > "open in itunes. It opens the iTunes app but no song starts playing, nor does it show the title or anything.

Something has changed recently regarding audio ripped from YouTube, although it's not clear what, or whether it's YouTube, the convertor or iTunes. However, we've seen several posts here about this and the effect is that the files are no longer being added to iTunes.

The solution is to find another convertor programme or better still, buy the music and thereby support the artist who created it.

Others are from CD's I have not imported to iTunes

If you haven't imported them into iTunes, you don't know that there is a problem. Perhaps I simply haven't understood you, not least because the method for adding a CD to your Library is completely different to adding audio that is already in digital form (in other words, a computer ready format).

To add a CD, you do not use File/Add File to Library, you do not download (from the internet) and you cannot drag from CD into iTunes. Instead, you use the Import CD option. I suggest that you try importing from a CD into your iTunes Library and post back with details if it doesn't work.
