Switching Computer
My wife is getting a new iPad. I would like to use her old MacBook Pro computer to sync with my photo Library so existing photos on my old computer currently in the cloud go to the MacBook.

Just create a new account on the macbook for you, and set it up with your apple ID. Set up iCloud photos for that account, and it will download your icloud photos to that accounts photo app.
You can leave you wife's account in place in case she ever needs to use the mac.
System settings>users and groups>unlock with password and click +
