iPhone 13 pro Speaker Sound Issue

Hi, I am having issues with the speakerphone of my new iPhone13 pro. When I am on calls and switch the speaker on, the person on the other end of the call cannot hear me clearly. They complain my voice is breaking up or they have a hard time hearing me. This is not a network issue since the moment I switch the speakerphone off, the issue is resolved. I have experienced this issue about 8 out of 10 times, so, it is quite frequent. The speaker otherwise works fine and I have tried recording videos and voice memos and they play well on the speaker mode.

iPhone 13 Pro, iOS 15

Make sure you are talking towards the mic at the lightning port end with phone within arms length to avoid the noise cancelling cutting in. (it can be turned off in Settings, Accessibility, Audio visual)

If it still malfunctions after that take it in or send it in for repair .

You can reach out to Apple Support directly. Depending on your region, you may be able to reach them here: contact Apple Support

I have the same issue since i bought my iphone 13 pro in feb 2022 . I gave it for repair last week only for it to be sent back without any repair with a note saying they couldn’t reproduce the issue. I realized just now that the issue is only when im using a phone cover/ covering the bottom of the phone when i talk ( for instance when without a cover , if I place my phone on a standing position or if I have my finger covering the bottom part of my phone while holding it.

Placing the phone flat on a surface without a phone cover is the only way people can hear my voice without it breaking while im on speakerphone.

tried and tested :)

Although I cant NOT use a phonecover as I dont trust myself with anything that breaks upon fall- so my solution is not really a solution for me but might help others :)

Wow! I can't believe there are five pages on this issue without even the slightest hint at the right solution.

I spoke to a Senior Advisor at Apple when the same issue surfaced for me. The answer he gave me seems

to have done the trick.

There is more than one mic on the iPhone 13. In fact, there are three. The one at the bottom, next to the speakers, is the

microphone that you use when you are holding the phone up to your mouth (which makes sense because

it is closest to your mouth when holding the phone). The second one is in the notch at the top of the phone on the front.

According to this Senior Advisor, when in Speaker phone mode, the microphone that is in use is the one on the BACK

and at the TOP of the phone (next to the camera lenses). If you set the phone down on its back you are smothering or muffling that microphone. The same problem occurs if you are holding the phone in a way where your hand or finger covers over that area. It seems logical since if you are teleconferencing, then the microphone should be on the same side as the video lenses, not on the opposite side, right?

Look, this Senior Advisor could be a pathological liar but I no longer get any complaints of a muffled or hard-to hear voice. He was also the ONLY Senior Advisor who was able to correctly diagnose and assist me with a complicated problem that required reinstalling the Monterey OS. And yet AT&T is the first Google link on this query and gets it totally wrong! Evidently, the Apple specs do not even mention the mic in the camera system!

Will someone at Apple please verify this? Which of the microphones is the one that is activated in speaker phone mode?

I believe I have the answer but would appreciate some validation. You don't want us looking foolish speaking into the wrong microphone, do you?

Having the same issue. Got iPhone 13 Pro Max a month ago. Been to Verizon twice and swapped out today for a new phone. Same issue - speakerphone cuts out when there is a hint of background noise. VERY frustrating for an $1100 phone.

Apple took away noise cancellation in the 13 models, so there are no settings to adjust either per prior reply.

One thing that oddly seems to work for me is to goto settings>> cellular >> cellular data options >> voice & data

then select LTE instead of any of the 5g options. It’s very odd that this seems to resolve the issue. I would think it was carrier related but this issue seems to be occurring for a ton of people using various carriers. I’m curious to see if this fix works for anyone else. Pretty annoying to not be able to use 5G if I want to be able to have speakerphone or FaceTime work.

Same exact issue on iPhone 13. . Didn’t notice at first until started using the speakerphone more. No issue on XSMax previously owned. I still have it and swapped sims to check. Definite issue on this phone. I’ll be bringing this back to the apple store for a demo next week and demanding a refund. Had the phone over the 15 day grace but this is a hardware/software design or manufacturing issue.

I have an iphone 13 (not pro) and have had this problem since the beginning. I've worked out that it is only when on speaker phone - which I use a lot! I've figured out when talking on speaker to my husband, if he is making a background noise while talking to me that's when my voice cuts out for him. If he is in a quiet place then it doesn't cut my voice out. So now since it appears Apple hasn't figured this out or care, we need to figure out how to fix this ourselves or just not use speaker phone - which having spent nearly $2k on this phone is not an acceptable option.

I have also read all the comments in this forum. I've tried all the suggestions on this forum.

APPLE - the problem is the phone trying to correct the background noise of the caller vs hearing the speakers voice. How do we fix this???

Using Bluetooth does not have the issue.

its a hardware/software problem. They don’t even have the same settings controls for ambient noise as previous iPhones using the same IOS. It’s pathetic. I’m sure they know about it and can’t fix it. Slow roll hoping people put up with it and buy another phone!! I went to the apple store after I first posted and they replaced the entire back of the phone which according to them included the speakers etc. I’ve had it a few weeks since and it’s no different. Phone bought in August. Always had the problem. I’m working with my bank to have my credit card purchase refunded and they can deal with Apple. I’m so sick of their nonsense.

How did you get on with the change to 4G. I have tried this and it didn't work. I think the reason the person thought it worked was actually to do with any background noise being made by the caller..... see my previous reply ....

I am having the same exact issue when using the speaker on iPhone 13 blue. Just got it on 11/29/2021 & didn’t activate it for 2 weeks after that.

When on a call on speaker others will say that phone is breaking up but it’s fine when I switch to earpiece.

This has been an issue from day one! I have called customer service/support & have been told to update twice, restore from iTunes, contact carrier, etc.

When talking to customer support they act as if this is my issue but thanks to this forum I know for sure that it is not.

Last rep said I could send in for repair or pay a service fee $31 to replace for an issue that is related to this phone hardware/software issue.

I have tried the suggestion from this forum, didn’t resolve issue.

Will call carrier to see if I will have to pay activation fee again if I get another phone.

This has been so aggravating!

I got my first 13 pro on launch day in the uk via O2. I established very quickly that there was a problem on speaker because I use my phone daily that way & everyone was complaining that I was cutting out. I had 3 replacement phones leaving 6 weeks in between sending phone 3 back & ordering another one. Still the same issue. That too was returned so back to my XS. Sadly Apple don’t appear to admit there is even a fault & whilst I really do need an upgrade, I am not having a phone that isn’t fit for purpose. Surely it doesn’t take 5 months to resolve an issue like this? Come on Apple. Please sort before your customers go elsewhere!
