I think you have it backwards. You need to create more space on the phone if you want to update the phone. Depending on your model of phone, you may not be able to update any further.

You can check which phone model you have in Settings>General>About>Model Name. You can take a look at this for some help in creating space on the phone. You will have to delete some content.
