Mac stuck on encrypting with FileVault

My Mac desktop recently crashed, I ended up erasing the hard drive and reinstalled macOS High Sierra. A few days OK I turned in FileVault and the encryption process has stalled at about the half way point. I have tried the pervious recommendation of holding down the Command R keys, but then the start up screen shows the circle with a line through it, I am unable to move forward. Restarting the computer as normal, I can start up, but the filevault is still stuck and slows everything else down. I appreciate any suggestions. Thank you. chris

FileVault status can be obtained via Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal session

fdesetup status

FileVault is On.

Encryption in progress: Percent completed = 44.48

diskutil cs list | grep 'Conversion Progress'

Conversion Progress: 44%

Conversion Progress: Optimizing 48%

FileVault encryption will continue across reboots, sleeps, etc...

FileVault disable in the middle of encrypting via Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal session, but be aware that it is going to then proceed to decrypt everything it has already encrypted, so this going to be just as slow.

sudo fdesetup disable
