Screen time app limits

We recently got new iPhone 12’s and gave our iPhone 8 Plus to our daughter. I set up her screen time app limits and have noticed that she has been using more than the hour total I’ve set for each category of social and game apps. Why is she able to do that? It says it resets everyday at midnight, yet she is able to be on TikTok for more then 2 hours each day!

Hello Corrie84,

Thanks for your response. I believe I have set up everything correctly from my phone and I have set a passcode that she doesn’t know. She is still able to go over her limit of an hour for each category. Also, it does show that she is using apps that I have not allowed during the downtime I have set. See my screen shots. Am I found something wrong or is there a glitch?

SpicyMama,

Thanks for those additional details and those screenshots; that was very helpful. It looks like for the most part you have the settings set correctly. Did you make sure that apps she uses such as TikTok, Roblox, Snapchat, etc. are not listed under "Allowed Apps" in the Always Allowed section of Screen Time settings? This can't be determined from the screenshots you included. Any apps that are listed there would always be available to her even during downtime.

If you continue to experience this same thing the next best step would be to reach out to Apple Support so they can look into this further: Get Support

Cheers!

Hello SpicyMama,

We understand that your daughter is able to use certain apps longer than the total amount of time you have set up in Screen Time settings. We know it's important for these settings to work like you expect them to, and we'd like to help.

First let’s check to make sure everything is set up correctly for this feature to work the way you want it to. When you set up Screen Time for that device did you do so using either Family Sharing or directly through the device itself by selecting "This is My Child's iPhone"? If not, make sure you do that using the steps here: Use Screen Time on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

We recommend choosing the option to set a Screen Time passcode as well, and make sure it's one your daughter would not know. If this issue is occurring during scheduled Downtime, go to Downtime in Screen Time settings and enable "Block at Downtime". Also, go to App Limits > [Limit Name], and enable "Block at End of Limit".

Lastly make sure the affected app has not been included in the "Always Allowed" section of the Screen Time Settings. Please respond back if she continues to be able to bypass the app limits you set.

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

Take care.
