This message pops up everytime I try to install a new app, like skype, storytel, etc. I have tried downloading them from app store and from their official sites but it seems that it does not make a difference. Help.

That error message typically means that you have replaced the internal SSD with a non-Apple one. The Monterey upgrade includes an update to Mac's firmware and the installer needs to write to an APple disk to make the firmware update. If not present the install terminated.
Is a non-Apple SSD installed?
Has one down a Safe Boot and then Reboot in normal mode. Then attempt to install the Third Party Applications.
Sometimes Safe Boot just puts a lot of thing right.
Delete the Monterey installer currently in the Applications folder. Then boot to Safe Mode. That boot up takes minutes.

Then download the installer again and do the install in Safe Mode.
The macbook is brand new and nothing has been changed
Maybe I have not been clear or I just misunderstood your reply, but I have no problem with the OS installation. I can't download apps on it.
