Use HDMI monitor without laptop power?

My 2017 13" MacBook Pro has a USB-C to DVI adapter to use an external monitor that has a DVI input. Unfortunately, I had to have my MB Pro charging all the time in order to use the external monitor. That killed the battery.

My new 2021 16" MacBook Pro has an HDMI slot. Can I use an external monitor that has an HDMI input without having to have my new MB Pro charging all the time?

Yes, you can use it that way. I have done it. But normally I keep the power supply connected all the time. I have never had a battery problem. The computer is (supposed to be) smart enough to manage the power to the battery.
