Terrible performance on M1 Pro 16 inch Macbook Pro

Hi

Am the only one getting random CPU spikes, random midi notes hanging, random crackles turning into feedback, and random crashes on the latest Logic Pro with M1 in native mode ?

I only use native M1 plugins, yet it all feels really buggy, something i've never experienced before on any machine.

Thanks

To anyone who cares, I've been going back and forth non stop with these m1 issues. I have been able to either fully solve my pops / clicks / logic restarting playback due to cpu overload of a single core issue, or at the very least reduce them extremely. Here are the steps I took to investigate this and what I've come to understand.

I purchased an m1 MacBook Air, and I migrated my entire system from the Mac Studio onto it.

I then purchased a Razor thunderbolt dock -- that way I could easily connect every peripheral device, including my audio interface, which is a UA Apollo X6 - thunderbolt 3 version, to both setups, by simply plugging the single dock connector cable into either system, bringing them into theoretically the same environment, just on two different machines.

I then ran sessions in which I was having intermittent audio issues as described above, on both machines. I was trying anything I could to cause the machine to pop / click or restart playback -- often times this would happen if I was typing, using a browser or copy / pasting / editing within the DAW during playback.

I was able to make these issues happen on both systems. So, from there I began narrowing down the devices. I tested on both systems with my USB hub disconnected - it still happened. I tried it on both systems with the monitor I was using disconnected - it still happened. I tried it with no midi controllers or external hard drives connected - it still happened.

I then disconnected my Universal Audio Apollo X6 - connected via thunderbolt 3 cable, and I attempted to run just the session listening from the headphone jack of my laptop, after about 25 minutes of testing I could not reproduce the issue.

I then tried the same test with the Mac Studio, again, into the headphone output, and no UA device, tested it for a good 25-30 minutes, no issues.

I then re-connected the UA to both systems and within the first playback on both systems, I was able to re-create the issues.

I then tried an alternate thunderbolt 3 cable, the issues happened again.

I then updated the laptop to Ventura - as the Studio is my work machine and I cannot risk it not running older sessions.

Ventura on the m1 air made no such difference as far as the audio issues were going. They happened with the UA, and did not happen when it was disconnected.

I then went to Guitar Center, purchased a cheap Focusrite 2i2 3rd gen, USB C device. Ran my monitors into it and I've been playing the problem sessions with it and have yet to hear any audio issues. Across both systems. I've even had it on play during the entire time I was typing this and still haven't had the issue happen.

I've called apple support and filed a ticket with UA. Apple told me that it is on UA and not them to fix the issue, as when doing playback with the built in audio output, there are no issues.

Hmm... I'm not finding that here; Studio One 5 seems to be fine. Though this is in pretty basic testing with a few third-party plugins and a few audio files, so I should dig around a find a bigger project to try. Later tonight I can see whether I can reproduce similar problems in S1.

Have you tried the M1's (closest) equivalent of an SMC reset—shutting down and leaving it off for 30+ seconds then rebooting? This has fixed weird little Apple Music glitches for me recently.

I think the Apple rep you spoke to about it is probably right, and it's coming from some other cause. This would also explain the Apple Music funkiness... I do get the feeling it's an OS thing. The annual update schedule is just unnecessary and should be reduced to every 2 years. Maybe if there are enough problems they'll slow down... (??) After all, there are still features coming out in incremental releases that were announced as "big news" last summer (e.g., Universal Control). So clearly they can't really keep up...

I am having this same issue on 16" m1 max with 32 gigs of ram and 2 tbs of storage. the specs are as high as they go aside from those two metrics. I decided to follow what I saw in another thread and get an older copy of logic off another computer that I luckily had and SO FAR it seems to be so much better. Not quite enough testing to fully call it solved for now but I'm hopeful things are at least workable now which is better then before.

Is it against the rules to post links to wetransfer or dropbox? I have a copy of 10.5.1 that's working great for me that might be useful for other people to test with but trying to get banned ect.

Completely absurd there isn't a better way to rollback OS versions on OS X itself or apps. Makes it so we have to rely on each for links which is totally backwards.

Any way hoping to report better news when I test this a bit more.

I was in rosetta mode before trying the older version of logic and it only...kinda improved things but just barely. opening certain plugins would cause the machine to beach ball for a minute straight and still lots of crackling and system overload errors. Once again I'm crossing my fingers that version 10.5.1 continues to work better for me. Link to download it for yourself is in the other post I just left here.

Feb 18, 2022 11:17 AM in response to Kevin Pera

Wouldn't the fact that Logic is working perfectly on version 10.5.1 and 10.6.1 for a few people here imply that the issue is with the latest release of logic and not Monterey? I feel like it would be useful to identify the real culprit of the issue and narrow down the variables. Who knows maybe a logic dev is creeping in here we might help them out but that's VERY wishful thinking.

They definitely know that some people can run 10.6.2 without problems, since it was in my bug report.

As for earlier versions of Logic vs 10.7.x it's possible they've changed something in multi-core handling, or some other low-level functionality, that's being adversely affected by Monterey. Not sure. But the fact that I'd occasionally had problems in Apple Music suggests that it's definitely beyond Logic (also other users mentioning Ableton, etc.).

What is highly disturbing is that they have been having glitchy audio problems since the 2019 laptops. I got 5 replacements before I gave up. They also denied there being a problem despite literally hundreds of magazines talking about it. How are we now in 2022, with the most advance expensive laptops you can get, still having such issues? If its 3 years down the line and they haven't fixed it yet, I don't think its a little thing.

Hello folks,

I'm referring to the original question from @Bontempi

Been experiencing this on my former M1 on BigSur, too. But there's a strange issue that I haven't solved and haven't read about anywhere, but maybe you guys can confirm.

When I do my thing in Logic Pro X, sometimes I experience lags in the DAW interface that increase by time. It goes like this: I try to cut an audio file, but it won't select the scissors. I try to solo a track, but it won't react. I try to solo another track: no problem. I wanna shorten an audio file, it won't even show the "shorten cursor" and the audio file won't let itself cut. I try to shorten an audio file on the track below: it works without any problems. That's how random it is. It feels like having a ping of 500 in the DAW, just like playing a video game with bad internet. Another weird thing: Once this issue appeared, I maximized the Logic Pro window. The problems would disappear instantly. When I ran it in normal window mode again, lags came back. But that was just a random coincidence and won't solve the problem in general.

I threw out all plugins, but the issues were still there. This is driving me nuts. Tried on rosetta, but that won't do a thing either. I recorded a few videos for better understanding and put them into a youtube playlist. Does anybody of you guys know about this?

Running into the same issues on my end. Recently upgraded to a 16" M1 Max with 64GB of ram and 2TB of storage. Using mainly stock plugins and the latest Logic and OS updates. Logic continually stutters and crashes. The 10 cores are running at max when only playing audio files with no plugins. Attempting to adjust even the buffer size and Logic freezes and is unresponsive forcing me to have to force quit. My intel with four i7 cores and 16GB of ram worked better than this.

Hi. I can 100% assure you that Native Instruments are aware. I talk to people inside NI quite often, we've had troubleshooting calls about this several times, have even been to their HQ to discuss.

I'm not endorsed by them, but have done plenty of work with them in the passed, so I chat with them quite often.

Apple on the other hand, are annoyingly reticent to admit there is an issue.

I don't know if they know about it, that is to say, whether they're admitting it from all of us that have called them over the last few months, or if they're choosing to ostrich and pretend the issues do not exist. They clearly do, but if we hide, maybe they'll go away. Nope.

Thank you so much for posting this. I'm also experiencing a lot of the same issues: pops and clicks, weird out of sync timing issues with playback, random restarts of a project, etc with built-in or through 1 of 4 audio interfaces. In addition the problem persists whether Logic is in Rosetta or Native mode no matter the buffer size. This is on a MacBook pro 14 with M1Max chip and 64 gigs of ram.

After 2 months of back and forth with Apple support, I was finally told to find another audio interface that might work... After testing NI's Komplete Audio 2, Focusrite's Scarlet 18I8, Apogee's Element 24, and Universal Audio's Arrow, I don't think I'm in the market for another one. It's been extremely frustrating to say the least, but finding that I'm not the only one experiencing these extremely disappointing glitches is reassuring. Here's hoping an update from Apple will address this, whether it's Operating System wide, or within Logic. I've also submitted a bug report.

Hi all, just found this thread recently and here we are over 3 months since the first post and no official fix. I am simply adding another voice to confirm this is a very real issue. I upgraded from a mid 2012 MBP 16GB to a brand new 14inch MBP M1 Max with 32GB and had the latest Logic pre installed. I am only using IZotope and East/West Composer Cloud plugins and doing everything with Rosetta. Same issues of CPU spikes. Pops, crackles. MIDI sound (as I am playing while the track is playing) turns to digital trash. I have to stop everything then the sound may or may not come back in which case I have to reload it or close and restart the project.

I have also tried to run a new session with only Apple Loops and my acoustic guitar recording less than 10 tracks and I still get issues. As I watch the CPU meter it definitely shows one core spiking.

I will definitely add my voice to the official Logic Pro Support portal and keep the pressure on them.

Ok, I installed the last updates for Monterey and Logic, been working on some current projects and yes, it has improved.

And yes, there are still things that don't work properly. I'm on a MBP 14" M1 Max, hooked up to a Lynx AES16e PCIe card in a TB Sonnet chassis with Dangerous Music DA converters and lynx Aurora for audio rec. & playback...

I'm still running Logic in Rosetta mode as not all plugins are Native.

I've yet to test with large session recordings (16-24 tracks at once) but so far the bugs I had during tracking seem to be gone.

However, I've just experienced a crash (god bless Auto-Save!!) coming from nowhere, and get cpu overloads on a 'light' session (less than 20 audio tracks, 2-3 plugins max per track, 1 plugin on the master buss).

On playback I'm on 50% CPU, which I expected to be lower, even if I'm on Rosetta.

I get some weird digital cracks on some YouTube videos sometimes, but nothing in Logic and no ghost sounds...

Bottom line, the updates have certainly helped, thanks! But it is still not what I'd call a reliable professional setup where things perform rock solid and all you have to do is focus on the task.

I'll try the Bille Elish "ocean eyes" session and report...

Yeah, I had something similar, though a lot less severe—basically just clicks/pops occasionally when switching to Safari. But this kind of thing obviously should never happen, and points to an issue with the OS, which is why I've been wondering whether this is a macOS problem that's been exacerbated by Logic 10.7.x. Other reports here suggest that it's improved by a TB interface, but I didn't find that when I tested on a Focusrite Scarlett 18i20, which was better than my Audient ID-22, but definitely not good enough to use.

Mind you, I've been working perfectly well on 10.6.2 (using the Audient, Focusrite, or built-in) for the current project I'm on, which obviously suggests it's Logic 10.7.x that's to blame. So who knows? That project wraps up in a few days, so I may try to do some more thorough testing on 10.7.3 once I have a bit more free time. I also want to do some more thorough testing in Studio One, since I haven't really pushed it enough to know whether it's okay or not—same with Dorico, actually. Both of those seem okay, on a quick test, but if this is really an issue with the machine, then I need to know asap.

Just chiming in here. I'm using an M1 Macbook Air and am more and more getting the issues described in this thread. I'm still on Big Sur, and after recent Logic upgrades seemed to cause lots of stuttering I went back to 10.6.3, which appeared to improve matters. But for some reason things seems to be getting worse, and I don't know if it's because of a recent Big Sur update... well, I can't think of any other reason.

Until perhaps 4 months ago my system seemed extremely stable; playback never stuttered but rather did the classic Logic overload with playback stopped as a result. Now it glitches, sometimes to a degree that's farcical.

Quite frankly, this is not at all useable for professional purposes, and barely for hobbyist purposes. I've been hoping system stability would be restored with an update but it's been months now.

I'm not sure if I should risk upgrading to Monterey and hope that this fixes things, which seems like a stretch given what people are saying on this thread.

To add to that, I'm also getting a ludicrous amount of hanging notes. With Logic 10.6.3 once I've been working on a project for 10 or 20 minutes hanging notes will start creeping in, and I'll have to close and reopen. With 10.7.3 the issue is much worse to the point of being unusable.

I'm not having an issues with Logic, I am not using Rosetta mode and using NI plugins. I am having big problems with Traktor ( I know its not supported yet!) and Premier. On advice of an Apple tech support person I opened Adobe Premier in a new user account and its definitely working better. I couldn't run 1 track of 4k footage without it stuttering badly, even at 1/4 res. Now I can just about run 2 tracks. I am not sure if it is meant to be able to run more but thats twice as good as it was before I switched user accounts. Worth a test? id love to know if anyone else is using Adobe Premier. I have the highest spec Mac you can get but with a 2TB SSD, 14 inch.
