Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We understand that you're having an issue with opening Microsoft Word after updating to macOS Catalina. We'd like to help.
Have you tried to boot into safe mode to see if Word will open at that point? If not, give that a try now. This mode will complete some checks to see if there are any errors on your system. It will also stop your login items from loading.
How to use safe mode on your Mac
If Word opens at that point, try to boot up again normally and see if Word opens as expected.
If it doesn't, please reach out to Microsoft to see if they have any updates or troubleshooting steps that are specific to this issue.
