What do the toggles do under Settings > Notifications > Calendar > Customize Notifications? (iOS 15)

The toggles are for Upcoming Events, etc.

I thought perhaps they would open up separate options for each thing's notifications, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Or perhaps individual options for notifications in Calendar items themselves but that doesn't seem to be the case. Or perhaps separate Siri suggestions.

Controls at a global level whether certain alerts will trigger.

For example: Set a calendar alert for an upcoming event. If the custom notification toggle is off it doesn't matter if you have the alert set on the calendar item, it won't trigger at all.
