Macbook screen brightness automatically adjusts, even though I have this function disabled.

My new MacBook Pro resets the screen brightness to medium whenever I turn it on. I have the "automatically adjust brightness" box unchecked and the brightness level on top of it at the max, but the brightness still goes down to medium whenever I turn it on.

I would like it to be on maximum brightness always... any ideas?

Thanks

Hi there CoHersk,

Thanks for posting about your issue with brightness on your Mac. We'd like to look into this. As we understand it, you've unchecked the "Automatically adjust brightness" option in System Preferences > Displays and set the slider to the maximum, but the slider value seems to change after you power up. Is that right?

Is the "Automatically adjust brightness" option remaining unchecked when this happens? As a test, what happens if you hold your hand over the camera for a moment?

It might be helpful to try a reset of your System Management Controller, which handles a few possibly related functions on the Mac. The steps vary by model. Check them out here: How to reset the SMC of your Mac

Let us know how it goes after the reset. Take care.

This did the trick! Thanks

In case this is helpful for anyone else: Yes, the "Automatically adjust brightness" option remains unchecked when the brightness goes down, and nothing happens when I hold my hand over the camera. The brightness also went down whenever I used the Mac after it had been on "sleep", even if only for a second. Reseting the SMC solved the problem :)

Hello CoHersk,

Thanks for getting back to us with the results. If the issue persists, let's try testing this in a newly-created user account in order to narrow it down a bit. Here's how to Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac. Let us know if the same thing occurs there as well. This helps determine if it's a system-wide issue or if it might be something in the user account.

Best wishes.
