No tones on text or email

I have set up tones for my text messages and for my incoming email. Why aren't they sounding?

Make sure the Mute switch is not turned on. Make sure that you have the volume turned up sufficiently to hear tones. Verify that you have notifications turned on for text messages and email, besides just selecting a sound.
