Is it safe to install extra memory to iMac?

I have an iMac 2017 with 16 GB of ram, and 2 slots are open. Sometimes FCP freezes because I do heavy editing with many plugins.

Is it safe to install extra memory to iMac myself, never done it before? 2 16GB of RAM will have a total of 48 Mg. And what brand do I buy? I called Apple support and they told me not to mess my self, and always buy an extra memory when I am buying the computer, which I do not rush at this point.

I read some of the reviews on Amazon that people complained they fried their mother board.

Thanks.

Corsair is known to have issues on Macs. You are of course free to choose those if you want. OWC and Crucial are recommended for best compatibility with Macs and excellent customer support.

Yes, you can place the new RAM in the empty slots, no need to move the existing RAM anywhere.
