My Micintosh HD is running short of memory thereby making it difficult to upgrade. How can we resolve it?

It is not memory (which is RAM) it is storage space on your hard drive. You can either remove some old, unneeded files or transfer then to an external drive so you can delete them from your HD to clear needed space.
