iCloud not uploading files or folders

Hi,

I am trying to back up my early 2015 MacBook pro to the iCloud so I can get something else. When using the Finder to upload files directly to the iCloud Drive it says "Zero KB of ## GB" for hours - no progress at all. I then tried to upload files directly to the web using iCloud.com and it says "File Couldn't be Uploaded. Try uploading file again later". Am I not able to back up my laptop to iCloud and will just have to suffer and lose my files in order to wipe the laptop clean?? I have 95.35 GB of iCloud storage unused too.

Thanks

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.15

Try going to System Preferences/iCloud (Apple ID for Catalina or later) and stop syncing by unchecking the box. Wait a couple of minutes, then check syncing. Allow time for the sync to complete. The photos sync is extremely slow. It could take several days or more for the photos to sync..

Last resort  - have you tried signing out of iCloud, restarting, and then sign back in?
