Apple Watch WiFi calling strange behaviour when iPhone left behind

Ok, there are many discussions dealing with different Apple Watch WiFi Calling issues, right, but I'm getting some half-way issues over here.

  • Apple Watch 3 GPS only, latest WatchOS 8.1
  • iPhone SE 2020, latest 15.1 iOS
  • Croatian T-Com cellular service, WiFi calling activated and normally working

  • no wifi calling option in iPhone Watch app -> Phone
  • no Apple Watch in iPhone -> Settings -> Phone -> Calls on Other Devices
  • unpaired and paired again -> still the same

  • iPhone is on 4G, bt off
  • Watch is on home wifi (2.4 GHz & 5 GHz)

  • Messages are working - they go both ways... even with one android, too (so no iMessages; cellular network)
  • WhatsApp is working both ways... don't getting whatsapp call notif, but getting missed whatsapp call notif

  • voice call doesn't get through, and SOMETIMES I get missed call notif (approx 1 min later), sometimes NOT... further on - that missed call notif is received "in the background" - no vibration - have to wake up the watch and red dot is there.... Call Back results in "Call Failed"...

any idea what to try next?!

Hi antefromdubrovnik,

Thank you for posting in Apple Support Communities! From our understanding, you are running into an issue enabling Wi-Fi calling on your Apple Watch, do we have that right? Wi-Fi calling is enabled automatically when you enable "Allow calls on other devices" from Settings > Phone > Wi-Fi Calling. Is it enabled there? This location is different from Settings > Phone > Calls on Other devices.

Check out this article: Make a call with Wi-Fi Calling

You also mentioned that you were not getting notification for specific apps and phone calls, is that right? Check out this article to confirm your notifications are set up correctly: Notifications on your Apple Watch.

Hope that helps!

Ryane77,

thanks for Your care... AppleID is the same one, tried everything from Get Help but still nothing... regarding my carrier - it's a strange thing - both "WiFi Calling" and "WiFi Calling on supported iCloud-connected devices” are missing on the list of the supported services, but my carrier regularly offer WiFi Calling, they activated it for me and it's working normally on practically every WiFi I've had tested it on... using my iPhone, of course... but zero points when trying using watch with iPhone not nearby... and I'll repeat: I'm using sms, facetime audio, whatsapp and even notifs of missed voice call normally on my watch when iPhone not nearby....

antefromdubrovnik,

Thank you for those screenshots. Are you signed into your Apple Watch with the same Apple ID? Also, did you try the steps in the article provided above ( Make a call with Wi-Fi Calling) under the section titled "Get Help"?

You can also confirm that Wi-Fi calling is supported by your carrier: Wireless carrier support and features for iPhone.

If this continues and all requirements are met, you may want to reach out to Apple Support for further assistance. Depending on your region, you may be able to reach out to them here: Get Support.

Have a good one!
