Battery drain with Apple Wallet and Apple Family Card

So, here's the situation. Way back at the end of July 2021, Apple released iOS 14.7 allowing both me and my wife to finally consolidate our separate Apple Cards into one Apple Family card and becoming both co-owners of the Apple Card. We were on a family vacation in Europe (different time zone, not sure if relevant) during the time. Right after the update, my son (who I added as a participant earlier in iOS 14.6) complained that his Apple Watch Series 5 and iPhone no longer were holding their charge well and I also noticed a severe drain on my own Apple Watch Series 4 and iPhone 12 Pro Max. We didn't think much by it, but our watches would frequently be near empty at the end of 10-12 hours. However, when iOS 15 came around, the battery drain became insane and both our watches would frequently be at 0% after merely 6 hours of use. Both iPhones would show that the Wallet app was showing insane amount of battery usage:

(Older Screenshot from October of the iPhone 12 Pro)

I tried the following remedies:

For my son's iPhone and Apple Watch Series 5 exhibiting the same issues, I simply removed the Family Apple Card from his wallet and removed him as a participant, it completely resolved the issue!

For myself, I attempted the following:

  • Re-paired and factory reset my Apple Watch - did not solve the issue
  • Borrowed my daughter's iPhone 12 which she wasn't using at the time, restored the most recent iPhone backup of my own iPhone12 Max Pro to her iPhone 12 and wiped her data clean. Effectively her iPhone 12 became an exact duplicate of the iPhone 12 Max Pro I used. However, I paired my Apple Watch Series 4 with the cloned iPhone 12.
    • Days 1-5 following installation: DID NOT ADD APPLE CARD! I barely used the phone, it was sitting on my desk and the battery consumption of both Apple Watch Series 4 and iPhone 12 was normal and I had 40% battery remaining for my Apple Watch series 4 at the end of each day (of approx 16 hours of use).
    • Days 7-8 following installation: ADDED APPLE CARD to the Apple Wallet of the iPhone 12. Soon after, it too started exhibiting the same Apple Wallet battery consumption of around 50% that my old iPhone 12 Max Pro experienced and the Apple Watch Series 4 too would be depleted again after 6 hours.

So, I returned my daughter's iPhone 12 back to her (restored it to her backup) and focused on the issue on my iPhone. I removed the Apple Card from the Wallet app. It did not resolve the issue instantly. Instead it still would be using battery. However, after shutting down both iPhone 12 Max Pro and Apple Watch Series 4 for a few hours, and putting the Watch in Airplane mode, the watch instantly stopped the battery drain (actually it became insanely efficient - close to 60% still remaining at end of day). After the 2nd or 3rd day I stopped enabling airplane mode. This resolved the issue for me and the battery on both devices resumed to normal operation. Albeit without having the Family Apple Card. A few days ago I wondered if maybe Apple fixed something on their end, so I added the Apple Card once again.

Low and behold, the battery drain returned after 3 weeks and my Apple Watch dropped 20% battery in 2 hours.

I called Apple Support and Goldman Sachs, both escalated the issue to their engineers back in October. I haven't heard back and called numerous times to only be promised call backs that never occurred. It's a pity, I liked using my Apple Card, but now I'm relegated to using my old Bank's Credit Card because of a software glitch caused by the backend cloud services at Apple.

One thing I noticed, around the time I upgraded to iOS 14.7, I was in Italy. Interestingly enough, some of the charges from that time period are still showing as pending in December of 2021. Not sure if that is anyway connected, but it might be:

If you have a similar issue and had a spouse with a separate Apple Card prior to iOS 14.7 and then consolidated, it might be related to the software not migrating the charges correctly. If yes, Apple needs to find a solution.

Please let me know if you did manage to find a solution that resolved battery issues while still permitting you to use your Apple Family Card. Thanks!

Update:

The only way to fix it was to close my Apple Family Card account. This ultimately resolved the battery drain, and my watch now is periodically at 50% at the end of the day. The Apple wallet app also no longer consumes much battery, barely a few percent if at all on my iPhone.

Apple, did you let an intern write the code for the Apple Card synchronization? The wallet app is garbage! Wouldn’t surprise me if you will have more problems down the road…not that I care since I no longer have the card ;) I really wonder how this is gonna work out with the digital drivers license?

So yeah, unfortunately switching of "Check for Apply Pay" in Safari doesn't remedy the situation. Frankly, I was a bit skeptical because the issue occurs also on the Apple Watch (remember all my devices are affected: MacBook Pro, Apple Watch and iPhone).

I removed both Apple Card and Apple Cash from my iPhone and Watch. This appeared to fix the situation completely - NO MORE BATTERY DRAIN! Yeah, but sucky because again I can't use the Apple Card.

So, today I figured I'd again add the Apple Card to see if switching off the "Check for Apple Pay" in Safari would work. Within a span of mere 48 minutes my Apple Watch went from 100% to 91%:

So, again, checked the log files, here's one interesting one that indicates again an issue with "passd" (from Apple's PassKit (i.e. Apple Pay and Wallet, i.e. https://developer.apple.com/documentation/passkit):

At this point I'm pretty confident that there's nothing I can do on my end, other than removing both my Apple Card and Apple Cash to fix the issue from my devices draining battery.

Please Apple, if you're reading this, do something! The solution is to overhaul the server code that handles the synchronization of transactions. My suspicion is that it isn't working for Apple Card Family members that are sharing the card with both co-owners (usually the spouse) and participants (typically the kids).

askbarnabas asked me to check in, as some people think I’m a battery drain expert. Looking over your troubleshooting it appears to be thorough, and I am mystified. What I did notice is the pending transactions all have associated completed transactions. Normally a completed transaction updates the pending transaction, but in this case it didn’t. That might be because you were traveling and no longer in the MasterCard region when the transactions were finalized by the merchants, so the charges could have a different internal ID (I try not to be too public about it, but I also have credit card processing experience). However, the pending charges should have timed out after several days, and the Wallet is trying to update them and can’t. This might result in repeated, failed communication attempts between the wallet and Apple Card servers, which could account for the battery drain. Note that this is all speculation, but you might try contacting G-S and asking them to remove the pending transactions.

I will say that the Wallet app has never appeared on my battery usage page at all, so that makes it all the more mystifying.

Here’s a possible Goldman Sachs solution. Close the Apple Card accounts, wait 30 days and then reapply. During the 30 day waiting period wipe all devices and reinstall your iCloud backups. During that period monitor and record battery usage each day at the same time. After 30 days have passed, reapply for Apple Card and follow instructions for adding Apple Cash and Apple Card. Monitor battery usage daily for 30 days after adding new Apple Card account.

That’s sort of the nuclear option, but it would get to the bottom of the cause.

Not trying to be argumentative, but without knowing the history of the devices, it’s just speculation.

If you want to disclose more information that may be helpful, a current screen shot showing the Battery Usage for the last 10 days of both Battery Usage by App and Activity by App. This will show background activity and relate to your premise that it’s caused by Pending Charges.

Sorry, not trying to be rude or argumentative. My apologies if it came across that way!

However, please bare the facts in the case in mind:

  • multiple devices are affected (my son's iPhone & watch, my daughter's iPhone, my iPhone & Watch), different iCloud accounts are involved (my own and that of my son)
  • The battery issue is immediately resolved when removing the Apple Card for both my son and myself
  • I already called Apple Support numerously. After factory resetting devices and performing other trouble shooting steps, Apple Support collected all the logs and screenshots. It was escalated to the engineering team, but I have not heard back from them since. This was escalated in October 2021.
  • In essence, I'm having the same issues as those described by the posters here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252725827, there was never a resolution found. If you carefully read through the posts, one person in the thread did perform a factory reset on their phone only to find that the problem returned a few days later.
  • So, that all being said, let's just for the moment assume that I'm correct and that the root cause is not due to any particular device but rather a result of the software running on the backend servers. The battery drain is merely an unfortunate and aggravating symptom. So, please let us not speculate with hardware resets, I tried all the obvious steps.
  • Frankly, unless you owned an Apple Family Card (possibly even only before iOS 14.7 were you added another person as a co-owner and were the accounts were merged following the release of iOS 14.7), and also own an Apple Watch, you might not be able to give me any advice. I am fairly convinced at this point, after months of research, that this problem is entirely a result of the backend synchronization that somehow involves the transactions/charges related to the Apple Card for individual family members and displaying them on the phones of the individual card owners/participants. Now, I'm not sure if the glitch is because of past transactions that occurred before the merging of the Apple Card accounts, or if actually is a result of ongoing transactions.

So again, no offense intended, but I'm pretty well versed as a computer engineer with all the obvious trouble shooting tips. What I need are out of the box solutions, and I'd be so grateful to anyone if they could help me figure out a way to be able to reinstall my Apple Card without it causing a major battery drain on my Apple Watch and iPhone. Thank you so much!

PS:

Also checked several log files on the iPhone, here's another interesting one:

4294.98 MB for the Wallet app, seriously??? Why???
