Battery drain with Apple Wallet and Apple Family Card

So, here's the situation. Way back at the end of July 2021, Apple released iOS 14.7 allowing both me and my wife to finally consolidate our separate Apple Cards into one Apple Family card and becoming both co-owners of the Apple Card. We were on a family vacation in Europe (different time zone, not sure if relevant) during the time. Right after the update, my son (who I added as a participant earlier in iOS 14.6) complained that his Apple Watch Series 5 and iPhone no longer were holding their charge well and I also noticed a severe drain on my own Apple Watch Series 4 and iPhone 12 Pro Max. We didn't think much by it, but our watches would frequently be near empty at the end of 10-12 hours. However, when iOS 15 came around, the battery drain became insane and both our watches would frequently be at 0% after merely 6 hours of use. Both iPhones would show that the Wallet app was showing insane amount of battery usage:

I tried the following remedies:

For my son's iPhone and Apple Watch Series 5 exhibiting the same issues, I simply removed the Family Apple Card from his wallet and removed him as a participant, it completely resolved the issue!

For myself, I attempted the following:

Re-paired and factory reset my Apple Watch - did not solve the issue
Borrowed my daughter's iPhone 12 which she wasn't using at the time, restored the most recent iPhone backup of my own iPhone12 Max Pro to her iPhone 12 and wiped her data clean. Effectively her iPhone 12 became an exact duplicate of the iPhone 12 Max Pro I used. However, I paired my Apple Watch Series 4 with the cloned iPhone 12.
- Days 1-5 following installation: DID NOT ADD APPLE CARD! I barely used the phone, it was sitting on my desk and the battery consumption of both Apple Watch Series 4 and iPhone 12 was normal and I had 40% battery remaining for my Apple Watch series 4 at the end of each day (of approx 16 hours of use).
- Days 7-8 following installation: ADDED APPLE CARD to the Apple Wallet of the iPhone 12. Soon after, it too started exhibiting the same Apple Wallet battery consumption of around 50% that my old iPhone 12 Max Pro experienced and the Apple Watch Series 4 too would be depleted again after 6 hours.

So, I returned my daughter's iPhone 12 back to her (restored it to her backup) and focused on the issue on my iPhone. I removed the Apple Card from the Wallet app. It did not resolve the issue instantly. Instead it still would be using battery. However, after shutting down both iPhone 12 Max Pro and Apple Watch Series 4 for a few hours, and putting the Watch in Airplane mode, the watch instantly stopped the battery drain (actually it became insanely efficient - close to 60% still remaining at end of day). After the 2nd or 3rd day I stopped enabling airplane mode. This resolved the issue for me and the battery on both devices resumed to normal operation. Albeit without having the Family Apple Card. A few days ago I wondered if maybe Apple fixed something on their end, so I added the Apple Card once again.

Low and behold, the battery drain returned after 3 weeks and my Apple Watch dropped 20% battery in 2 hours.

I called Apple Support and Goldman Sachs, both escalated the issue to their engineers back in October. I haven't heard back and called numerous times to only be promised call backs that never occurred. It's a pity, I liked using my Apple Card, but now I'm relegated to using my old Bank's Credit Card because of a software glitch caused by the backend cloud services at Apple.

One thing I noticed, around the time I upgraded to iOS 14.7, I was in Italy. Interestingly enough, some of the charges from that time period are still showing as pending in December of 2021. Not sure if that is anyway connected, but it might be:

If you have a similar issue and had a spouse with a separate Apple Card prior to iOS 14.7 and then consolidated, it might be related to the software not migrating the charges correctly. If yes, Apple needs to find a solution.

Please let me know if you did manage to find a solution that resolved battery issues while still permitting you to use your Apple Family Card. Thanks!

Hi, this could certainly be a hardware, operating system issue. Installing an upgrade/update to your device shouldn’t cause an issue such as you describe. However, issues can arise during installation that cause issues similar to what you describe.

My suggestion is to call Apple Support and describe the issues you’ve been encountering. Issues related to installing an iOS update are covered under warranty. You will not incur a charge for this issue. If you have Apple Care, you coveted for any charges. If you don’t have Apple Care, you are still covered because the issues appear to be caused by the iOS upgrade.

Thanks Jeff! That is actually the only option that I'm pursuing right now. Unfortunately it takes some time (i.e. using a different card to get to a zero balance). Also, I do have some device payments on the Apple Card, but yes, it is my only option if all else fails.

The screen shot is from back in October and only a single day. I’d like to see the 10 day report for the last 10 days. For all we know the Wallet issue is/was fixed by an iOS update. The other odd thing is the high screen on usage is only 2 times, 10 AM and 2 PM. High Wallet activity would not be screen on time. Too many questions to really pursue this.

So the mystery surrounding Apple Pay and Apple Wallet is getting weirder. I just noticed it is also affecting my MacBook Pro (purchased a month ago).

On your iPhone, please look at >> Settings >> Safari >> Check for Apple Pay (scroll down). Is it switched on/green? You might try switching off and then measuring battery usage.
