MMS not working, but it is enabled

The photo button is greyed out in Messenger, and I get an alert saying I need to enable MMS in order to send photos. But MMS is already enabled, and cellular data is on (but I’m on WiFi anyway). I tried turning MMS off, restarting phone, and turning it in again, no luck. Carrier is Google Fi, and has been for years, And this is the same XR phone I’ve had for years, and as of last week MMS worked fine. Phone has 21 GB free memory. Problems seemed to happen right after I installed iOS 15.1. Any suggestions for how to fix?
