Wired keyboard problems with m1 MacBook Pro 14" 2021

My new 14" MacBook Pro is giving me problems with my old wired apple keyboard. It occasionally works, seemingly randomly, but most of the time it stops and is not recognized by the machine/system. So far have tried safe mode and resetting SMC: How to reset the SMC of your Mac - Apple Support (CA) with no success.

Using a USB-A to USB-C adaptor which I have tested with other USB-A devices and it works fine.

My external HDMI screen is occasionally giving me problems too, outputting a distorted image, but this seems to be fixed by reconnecting the connection.

Any ideas?

I have a 13" MacBook Pro with Monterey and have the same issue. My old USB-A wired keyboard suddenly stops working. The solution I found is wait for 2-3 days and then connect the cable and it works. Since my keyboard is old I believed it was malfunctioning however I also have Air where it works perfectly.

Any recent solution?

interestingly I have a similar problem with my 1 month old BTO MBP. I would add that my wife had the same problems with another wired keyboard swapped between 2 intel iMac 27's which we have at home. She managed to get the wired keyboard to work again by 1st connecting a different wired keyboard to the mac she was using. Next she simply disconnected the 2nd wired keyboard, reconnected the original wired keyboard and it worked.

So.. I did exactly that on my MBP 14 inch. The 1st wired extended apple keyboard stopped working without any notification. I 1st tried connecting it to different ports ( I use a USB C to USB A adapter). The keyboard didn't work on any of the 3 USB C ports.

Next I connected another wired extended Apple keyboard to my MBP, it worked fine. ( nI did receive a message saying a new keyboard has been detected and to press the key to the right of the shift key to identify the keyboard) I then disconnected that and reconnected the original wired extended apple keyboard and guess what, it worked with no problem.

I have not had the problem again since but wondered in light of the notification, if there was a software/hardware error which failed to recognise the keyboard?

Perhaps someone with more technical expertise can understand what is happening.
