Apple TV 4K Remote not controlling Bose Wave III volume

I have a Bose Wave Music System III hooked up to my television via an optical cable. When I bought an Apple Tv 4K I was thrilled to find that you can train it to recognize any remote control by pointing it at the unit and using volume up and down. The Wave Music System III uses an IR remote but when I point it at the apple tv and hold either volume button down during the learning process, the apple tv doesn’t respond at all. It just continues to tell me to hold down the volume button until it tells me it didn’t detect a remote control signal. Is there another way to control the Bose Wave III volume on the ATV 4k remote?
