Cursor jumping on Monterey 12.0.1

the mouse cursor periodically jumps a few centimeters to the side regardless of my actions.
I am a photographer, and most often I notice this when I work with tools in Photoshop. for example, when working with a lasso, the cursor can suddenly bounce to the side by a couple of centimeters and spoil my selection.
this happens about once a minute.

Hello leoneed4speed,

From your post it appears that you are having an issue with your cursor moving on its own.

To solve the problem you are experiencing, we would recommend you do an SMC reset. The SMC is responsible for managing behaviors related to multiple systems, including the trackpad. Instructions to reset are available here:  How to reset the SMC of your Mac - Apple Support

Once the reset is complete, test the Mac and see if the issue continues.

Have a good day.

Hello leoneed4speed,

If the system has an M1 chip, then restarting the computer resets the SMC.

If the issue remains, try starting up the system in what is called safe mode. This will help isolate this issue.

To start in safe mode, begin with the computer powered off. Follow the directions found here, depending on what type of Mac you have: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

The computer will take longer to start in safe mode, and the screen may have some distorted video as it starts up. This is normal. Once you are logged in, use the system and test to see if the issue continues.

Please note if it only happens when using a particular app.

If everything seems to work as expected, go ahead and restart the computer normally and test again. Starting in safe mode forces the computer to run some disk checks similar to First Aid. This can resolve some issues.

Cheers.
