'An Unknown Error occurred' when logging in to iMessage

When logging in to iMessage on my Mac Mini using my Apple ID (which works on my phone and elsewhere) on Big Sur 11.6, I repeatedly get 'An unknown error occurred'.

Mac mini 2018 or later

Resolved. from one of the suggestions, turned off wifi and tried again - somehow that resolved the issue.
