IP68 - Apparently doesn't stand up to a splash

My iPhone 12 was 2 months old and has never been under water. It received a splash (not out in the rain) that was wiped off and is now not working. The screen went Green and then stopped working. It was sent to Supplier, who sent it to a service centre who advised that it was water damaged will not be replaced under warranty.

Can someone tell me why these phones are advertised as having an IP rating of IP68, which is an international standard, if they cannot be subjected to a splash and then keep working?

Apple only claims that it's manufactured to a specific standard, but not that it will necessarily stay that way. They don't use heavy duty rubber seals, but adhesive seals that can degrade depending any number of factors including previous exposure to liquids or exposure to heat. I've seen photos from when Apple allowed Reuters to visit their repair development lab, and they showed a sample of the seals that were used. They're basically just two-sided tape. It's easy to use but doesn't necessarily last.

About splash, water, and dust resistance of iPhone 7 and later - Apple Support
Splash, water, and dust resistance are not permanent conditions and resistance might decrease as a result of normal wear. Liquid damage is not covered under warranty, but you might have rights under consumer law.
