my fancy new iMac and its connected
Apple USB SuperDrive
is causing me problems.
Latest IOS upgrades seem to ignore the external CD/DVD reader and
burner and claim that is it not mounted; however, when I insert a blank
CD, it does "wake up" and allows me to burn a CD using Apple Music.
Frustrating... has anyone found a fix?

that is expected behaviour. at this moment, there is not a disc inside my USB superdrive. but it still appears in system preferences.
but it only displays a disc icon on the desktop when there is a disc in the drive. (i just inserted one)
and will also only appear in disk utility when there is a disc inserted.
Hi Hi :). Thank you so much for answering - OK - i have some CDs and DVDs that require Flash, and Flash is included on the CDs/DVDs... these play just fine on my old MacBook Pro; however they are not playing on my new iMac.
flash was discontinued by adobe last year. if you have discs that require flash, they will never be playable in your new iMac. there is not and will not ever be flash for the new macs. you may want to look for an app that can convert those older discs to a format that will allow you to play them. i have seen an app being suggested here called VLC Media Player, but i don't personally use it so cannot say if it will work for that.

sorry, actually, you can't convert the discs. you would need to convert the files and then burn them anew in the new format
Thanks again :). The flash is embedded in the cd and dvd, so they do play on my MacBook even though there is no flash on my old MacBook. I removed flash and the cd and dvd still work on the older Mac. So are you saying that it isn’t the same for my iMac and SuperDrive? 🙏🏼🙏🏼
if they play on the MacBook, but there's no longer flash on the MacBook, then i don't understand how they play on it. frankly, it is beyond my understanding why that happens. :-( i was never very versed on flash. maybe someone else here may be able to answer that for you.
