MS Excel stopped working this week on both my iphone and ipad, has something changed with respect to free use of Excel on IOS?

MS Excel is not and never has been "free" on any platform.
The App Store versions can be downloaded free, and can view Office documents with some limitations an no charge, however if you want to create or edit documents, you will need a Microsoft 365 paid subscription.
Well, something has changed within the past week. We have been creating and editing Excel spreadsheets across multiple IOS devices and multiple users for the past 3 years. We are limited to iphone and ipads less than a certain size. This week we lost editing capability, it keeps prompting to subscribe. Not sure what changed.
Contact Microsoft for help with this.
In the app description in the App Store it says creating and editing is available for screen sizes less than 10.1”. Is that what’s changed?
No hardware changes have occurred.
