What did the error message say?
If you go to your Applications folder is there an app titled Install macOS Monterey? If so delete it.
Next try booting to Safe Mode. That boot up takes minutes and clears caches and other things that may resolve your problem.

The wording of the question would indicate one is downloading an Update to Monterey which would mean there is Already an earlier version of Monterey already installed on this computer.
It that correct ??
Or, does one mean downloading an UpGRADE from what pervious version of macOS. ?? and If so what version?
Unfortunately I did not capture the error message details. It does not show up in my Application folder to delete. I will try and follow the instructions to boot in Safe Mode and let you know if that works. Thank you for your tips.
No currently I have macOS Big Sur and I am trying to download Monterey. I downloaded it once and got an error that I did not have enough space. Then I deleted a bunch of stuff and tried to download it again. That is when I got the error AND see the download icon with a ? on it.
Did you empty the trash after deleting the bunch of stuff? After reading these instructions about creating screenshots, could you upload a screenshot of About This Mac - Storage?
I tried a safe mode reboot and tried to do the update again. I got the following error.
