ITunes password not being accepted

I’m trying to update the Apple Store on my phone as it indicates there is an update outstanding. However, when I try to carry out the update it asks for the iTunes password or Appleid password but when I enter the applied password it says verification failed. I’ve created a new appleid password and tried that either the same result - what can I do next?

A "Verification Failed" messages is used in various scenarios which could be either a communication issue, or a problem with your account.

'If you can't connect or sign in to iCloud' click here --> https://support.apple.com/HT203512

"If you can't connect to the App Store, iTunes Store, or other Apple services" click here --> https://support.apple.com/HT201400

- If none of the suggestions work, try the last one: "If you’ve tried all of the above steps and you still can’t connect, contact Apple Support."

Verification Failed "problem connecting to the server" March 2018 - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8321958 - Needed to connect over wi-fi and not through cellular.

And the opposite:

"Verification Failed, An unknown error occurred" March 2018 - https://discussions.apple.com/message/33184357#message33184357 - "tried again with Wifi off and it worked"

If those don't resolve the problem, I suggest you contact Apple:

Contact Apple. Click here --> https://support.apple.com/choose-country-region Select your country, then a product. If you don't see one that handles your issue then keep experimenting with selections until you reach one that gets you a chat session or a telephone call and get the representative to redirect you.

Thanks for all of the suggestions, sadly none of them actually resolved the issue but whilst running through them I found an article that suggested deleting the Apple Store app then downloading it again. This worked and although it asked for the Appleid (which previously failed verification) it accepted it this time. So the issue is fixed although I would still like to know how it happened.
