How do I connect to the internet with an ethernet cable directly to a cable modem?

I have a MacBook Pro 2021 M1 and a Uni branded USB-C to Ethernet adapter. I took a cat-6 ethernet cable and connected it directly to my cable modem (Netgear CM500) to check the bandwidth speed. But when I went to the Network preferences, I could not find a way to get connected to the internet. Is this modem not able to do that? Just want to do a speed test.

Four Things...

A. Disable WiFi:

Try disabling WiFi, seeing if it connects via Ethernet.

B. Restart your Mac:

Having just now using Ethernetrestart your Mac, trying this once more.

B. Boot Safe Mode.

When you boot in Safe Mode, login items do not open at log in, certain preferences are set aside, and damaged system files (i.e. caches) are fixed. To boot up in Safe Mode [Hold Down: the shift key upon boot]. So, on both Macs, boot into Safe Mode for 30 seconds, and then restart normally. For instructions, go here: How to Use Safe Mode on your Mac - Apple Support

and...

C. Use a New Admin User:

Create a new administrator on this Mac (for temporary use), and see if you can perform this with this user. Once all is installed, login to the normal user, and delete these user you just created for the upgrade.

Q1. "[...]It had thunderbolt 1, 2 and 3. It kept forcing me to thunderbolt 3 (the port I assume). I was on the left port... is that 3?[...]"

A1. Confirm the Network's Connection:

  1. Hold Down: the Option key
  2. Click: the Apple menu
  3. Choose: System Information or System Report
  4. Select: USB or Network from the list on the left
  5. Look For: your Ethernet adapter

Q2. "[...]I really shouldn't have to create a new admin user for this operation.[...]"

A2. Its just a method of troubleshooting. Trash the admin after all is troubleshot.

Q3. "[...]Why would the ports be 'inactive' by default, anyway, if that is indeed the situation?"

A3. This is due to Caches being corrupt, which is what resetting the SMC/NVRAM is all about. But, that only applies to Intel-based Macs.

I failed to mention but yes I turned off wifi. I did try restarting my Mac. What is odd is that I didn't even see an ethernet choice in the Network prefs. It had thunderbolt 1, 2 and 3. It kept forcing me to thunderbolt 3 (the port I assume). I was on the left port... is that 3?

I really shouldn't have to create a new admin user for this operation. This used to be dead simple. Now they make it non-obvious, non-intuitive and frankly not working. I appreciate your suggestions but there must be something else I'm missing. I thought I stumbled on some control panel that seemed to be about activating a port or something but when I tried to go back to that later to study it more, I couldn't find it. Couldn't repeat how I got to it. Why would the ports be "inactive" by default, anyway, if that is indeed the situation?
