Email request to verify email address - a scam?

My wife received an email allegedly from Apple (appleid@id.apple.com) to verify her email address associated with her Apple ID, because a request was allegedly made to reset her password/unlock her account. The email provided a 6 digit code to enter (like a 2 factor code) for her to enter site to verify her account information. Is this a phishing scam?

Hi vtpw, We appreciate you reaching out to us. We understand that your wife received an email that is requesting to verify her email address, and you would like to know if it is a phishing scam.

We recommend that you look into the article below to help you determine if the email is a phishing attempt.

Instead of using any link on the email, we recommend that you visit our Apple ID page directly to make sure that the account details are up to date.

I've read the articles and have checked my info. Also reset my password.

The email I received and the code received on my iphone look legitimate.

The "go to appleid.apple.com" hyperlink did not have the https prefix though.

I would simply like to know if this was a phishing attack and then who made the request.

It definitely wasn't me--I was asleep! Or if this was a legitimate apple request--why?!

Is there somewhere to forward the email to at apple who tracks these scams?

I'd contact Apple Support if I knew something had been compromised...

It looks like this is a recent scam...or an Apple issue. Which?

Thank you.

Send the e-mail to Apple as an attachment to a new e-mail before deleting it. You can forward as an attachment by going to Mail/Message/Forward as attachment. Or control - click on the email and select Forward as attachment. Make sure you send it as an attachment to a new email. If you just forward it, it will probably be rejected. You won’t receive a response.
