Just "upgraded" to Monterey and like others... lost external camera for FaceTime.

  • Launch any app that uses the camera besides FaceTime by itself and the image transmission is fine.
  • Start FaceTime by itself... image is corrupted and pixelated and 90% covered in green which is indicative of problem in the codec.
  • Start any other app that uses the camera while FaceTime is running and FaceTime image is fixed.
  • Launch FaceTime AFTER another camera app is running and FaceTime will corrupt the image on both apps.

Apple, stop pointing the finger at the peripherals and drivers as that is NOT the problem. Your OS is a unix system where the OS sits between the apps and the peripherals. The camera, in this case, is always 'ready' for any app to make a call on it. The fact that Zoom and your own PhotoBooth app both can call external cameras proves there is no issue with the peripheral or the driver. If there was a problem with the driver the issue would be seen on all apps making calls for the camera.

The fact that this issue is just in FaceTime points to a problem with FaceTime, how it loads codecs and how it talks to the OS. Since Apple has closed-loop architecture... this is 100% their problem. Their own app, FaceTime, is not communicating with Monterey and vice-versa.

Work around...

Launch FaceTime and then launch Photo Booth. Then close PhotoBooth.

Whoops .... thank you! Yes, you are right!

Apologies! it was the update to Monterey 12.5 that helped with the camera on my macBook Pro.

Very grateful am no longer restarting again, and again, as the "no camera" appeared.!

Did find that Safari > Preferences > Websites > Camera ...

needed to be re-set (ticked) to Ask or aAllow (not Deny) for some apps (eg: Zoom).

Hello Terry,

It sounds like your Camera isn't working after upgrading to macOS Monterey. We understand how important this is to you and we are here to help.

This article may be able to help: If your built-in camera isn’t working on your Mac

If the issue persists, can you provide a few more details? What exactly happens when you attempt to access your camera? Do you get any errors or alerts? Are you able to use your camera on any other apps?

Also, which Mac are you currently using?

Cheers!

I tried again this morning. In Zoom, I deleted the entire zoom preferences folder, restarted zoom. After losing in fresh, I tried both cameras that have applications to use them in compatible applications. Both the Sony, and the Canon cameras were recognised. Yet they would not display an image until I turned off and on in two cycles. Strangely enough, both were seen and usable in Zoom thereafter, yet FaceTime refuses to list any camera other than the built in iMac webcam.

Both cameras were available in ScreenFlow too.

So it is likely Apple that needs a fix sooner than the cameras applications.

At first, I saw this issue earlier this year with one 2017 Macbook Pro. For this machine, the camera simply stopped being recognized by the system shortly after a BigSur upgrade. No troubleshooting helped here to revert the situation. At an Apple Authorised repair center, they suggested replacing the camera (Replace display). We did not go for it as it costs around € 500.

A couple of months later, I already have 3 machines with the same issue. For the 2 others, the camera stopped working from one day to another. Sometimes an SMC reset will make it work again, however, this is temporary, and most likely next day it will stop working.

I really don't think that these 3 MacBooks got the same hardware (camera) issue over such a short period of time. (The 3 MacBooks are from 2016-2017 and all run BigSur or Monterey)

There are definitely a lot of people reporting issues with this and the discussions go from waiting with upgrade to reverting back to previous OS and any possible troubleshooting steps inbetween.

I googled for ["camera" "not working" "monterey" solved] and found this below that looked interesting and that I would try if I was stuck.

Sorry again, and back to work.

Good luck and post back if you find out what worked for you!

Having the same issue on my late 2016 intel MBP — went through all the steps detailed on your link, which did not solve the issue.

When i called customer support I was told this is a hardware issue — the hardware worked fine up until the minute Monterey finished loading. While it could be a coincidence, it seems strange that other people have had the exact same experience. Please provide a software update that fixes this issue.

I have a 2019 maxed out 16inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar.

here are the problems:

  1. FaceTime has not received any video from the connected camera. Restarting your computer may fix this issue.
  2. Screen glitches
  3. Black Screen after wake from sleep
  4. login issue where the loading screen freezes once you put in your password have to reset 3 times

It all started when I upgraded to MacOS Big Sur and issues started with my FaceTime HD camera. I then upgraded to MacOS Monterey where the screen Glitches randomly when in use and a dark bar that covers the bottom or half the screen. The computer screen goes completely black after waking it from sleep forcing you to do a restart holding the power button that leads directly to the next issue. When turning on the Mac everything is normal until I try to sign in and the load screen freezes after I put in my password I would have to restart my computer 3 times before it signs me in completely and I can see the desktop. I have tried all solutions and even going into the Terminal quitting and still no luck. Booted in safe mode and even ran diagnostics with the D key on boot and I even did a fresh install. Safe mode had the same issues It see's the camera and no errors came back for any hardware. I recently downloaded the update yesterday 12.2.1 and still no camera luck and screen still goes black after wake and restart login issues persists but I have not seen any screen glitches yet.

The software is really bricking my computer, I spent too much money on this for it to happen along with many others.
