Is there a way to stop an email from being marked as read in preview

In the Mac OS email app, is there a way to stop an email from being marked as read when I just move to it in the list and don't actually open it to read it?

Can I stop Mail from automatically marking emails as read (before I have read them)? I'm sure I'm not the only one with too much email. I will often skim through the summary list, deleting some and moving some to junkmail. This gets rid of a lot. But as I move or delete an email, my cursor moves to the next email in line and marks it read. I then have to click on it and mark it as unread. Unless there's a crystal ball connected, Mail can't tell if I'm going to read the email. Can I get it to mark it read once I've OPENED it instead of when the cursor simply lands on it?

Why Don't Emails Stay "Read" In Mail? I have a MacBook Air (13-inch, 2017) running Big Sur Version 11.2.2 with Mail Version 14.0 (3654.60.0.2.21). On every other email client I've ever used, an email is marked as "read" if I click on it in my Inbox without having to double-click the email and open it. When I do the same thing in Mac Mail, a significant number of emails revert to being "unread" after a minute or so. There are some emails that I have to click on two or three times before Mac Mail accepts them as "read" and stops marking them as "unread". I don't understand this behavior. No other email client does this. I like to have a clean Inbox but this behavior makes it more difficult to determine how many new emails I've actually received.

A left-click of the newly arrived message will mark it as read. You can use a right-click on the message to move it elsewhere and it will remain unread.
