sd card not mounted by m1 pro MBP

Inserting an SD card into 2021 M1 Pro 16 MBP gets the card detected by disk utility but no finder window opens showing its files. If I remove the card I get a message reprimanding me for ejecting Untitled unproperly Reinserting the card there is no Untitled card visible. How can I access the SD card contents?

Finder menu > Preferences > General tab (and Sidebar tab, if you want), make sure the box to show external disks is selected.
