Typing in Pages but no text appearing

So frustrated! Pages has been working fine on my iMac 2017 (Catalina) and suddenly when I select a Blank template to create a new document, the cursor keeps blinking at the right hand edge of the page and I can't move it. I've also tried a text box and nothing at all is happening there.

The page looks like this (note the little red dot - what is that?). You'll also note that the cursor is actually on the left here - but it pinged back over again to the right.

Anyone got any ideas? This is wasting so much time. Thanks

I think I've solved it! The weird ghost question mark - boxed - to be more accurate was a clue that it was a font issue. It seems the font I use was disabled - maybe because it was duplicated in Font book?

I don't know, I found the suggestion in another post about boxed question marks in Pages and I followed the trail of breadcrumbs. Now I can see my text in Numbers, write in a new Pages doc and I'm guessing I'll be able to reinstall my Text Edit app and use it.

Hope this helps someone else.

Thanks!

Hey there, Lozziella.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! Thanks for posting about the trouble you're having with Pages not accepting typed characters. We'd be glad to see what we can do to help.

In most cases, the red dot you're seeing would denote a spelling or grammar error somewhere in the document. Since you can't enter text, that would make it a bit of an anomaly. Have you verified the margins of your document to ensure that text can be placed where you're looking to add it? If not, check out Set document margins in Pages on Mac for more info on that. It also might behoove you to click the Format button in the top right to verify that information is correct. This would include items like text color, font, document layout and some other specific configuration details. Give those steps a look and let us know what you find out.

Take care.

Hi there. Hope you had a good Christmas break! I'm back on this and nothing has changed.

I can open an existing document and the text is there. Presumably I could duplicate it and then overwrite it.

BUT I shouldn't have to do that.

When I open a new document, and start to type a weird question mark makes a brief appearance and then disappears and the cursor pings to the right of the screen. If I Select all and delete the little red dot and start to type the whole ghost-question-mark-cursor-ping-to-the-right happens again.

Interestingly, I'm also having an issue with multiple Numbers files - documents with text are showing as blank pages and I can't access the text, even though you can see at the bottom of the page that the text is out there somewhere.

Is there a connection? Why is this happening. I can't get anything done.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Hey I just remembered that my Text Edit was doing the same thing and I deleted it a couple of weeks ago - just decided not to use it anymore.

Should I export these files to Microsoft formats - Excel, etc?

It seems to me that there is a conflict or something. It can't be coincidence that the apps that are no longer functioning properly are the Mac ones?

Thanks.

I really need to access my documents then I can do my work but I'm stuck. Come on Apple, this cannot be acceptable to you! Please tell me that hours and hours of work has not just disappeared and is lost?

(Also, back to the first reply, my document margins seem to be fine. Not sure why they would just reset themselves into some weird format that I wouldn't have set them to in the first place? I'm simply opening a new blank file in order to write as I usually do.)

Sorry, I'm just so frustrated and feeling increasingly anxious about all this.

Thanks so much or that additional information, Lozziella.

Also, it is amazing to hear that you were able to root out the cause of this behavior and resolve it. Fonts are one of the things we don't think about all that often when it comes to issues with apps like Pages and Numbers, but as you've seen, they can be an important cog in the machine. If you run into any other issues, be sure to create a new thread. We'd be glad to see how we can assist in the future.

Be well.
