Bluetooth Speaker not playing from Macbook

I have a bluetooth speaker connected to my macbook yet it wont play any audio. I have ensured that it is not on mute and basic options like that. It doesn't pop-up when I go to choose my playback devices even though it says its connected as a "speaker" in the bluetooth menu. I went to system preferences as well and it doesn't appear there either. Any advice?
