Single audio w/multiple video clips

Question is how to position multiple video files, into the project timeline, where a continuous audio file is used to link various video clips — at random locations — where they match up (using audio syncing/ commonalities)...

Unfortunately, this means gaps (dead space) between the various video clips, which iMovie doesn’t seem like (automatically moving everything to the left until the video is one after the other).

Not overlapping, I know that can’t happen with video, only audio can (and is unintelligible until matched as SMPTE timecode and sync’d). But, it’s rather easy to match the video file to a spot on the audio file constant, using common audio cues.

Any tips on pinning the various video file(s) to specific locations along the audio’s timeline? At random if specific locations, with dead air between the clips?

The issue seems to be that iMovie doesn’t allow for any spaces between video clips... and no setting (that I’ve found, or web-searched), as a workaround.

Please advise.

And thank you~

Drag a black background between the video clips as a spacer and adjust the duration as required.
