I cannot find the update button

The update button is not there. In the upper right corner of the screen, you should see your photo if you assigned one to your Apple ID, or you will see a person icon. Tap that. It will take you to your account page. You can swipe down from your name and it will show you how many, if any, apps need to update. Tap on either the individual update buttons, or you can tap Update All under the Available Updates.
