Files on Mac are locked to other users on share

Bought a new M1 Mac Mini for a file server.

All users have been entered in. They can all log in with no problem.

Users can edit/create files but as soon as they save they are the only one that can access the files.

Dropbox can't sync them because the permissions of the share/folder are not going to the files that were edited.

This had been a problem before but was able to solve it using the Server app and since Apple has neutered the app, it no longer can fix ACL problems.

Propagating permissions fixes only the files there but not once they are edited or if they are new.

How can this get fixed nowadays? I'll use the terminal but I am not an expert on ACL/ACE lists.

What I want is that files inherit the parent folder/share permissions.

thank you!

that helped a lot!

I have one more thing:

People click on an alias to folders on the share and finder says it cannot find it. I presume it's because it's not logged in to the file server. I'm also not quite sure why, because it works fine from shares on my 16" M1 laptop that users connect to.

Is there a way that it auto logs in when people click on aliases? It works fine now on my older server (High Sierra), but not the M1 Mac Mini. People have to enter their user/pw, even if it's saved.

thanks for your help!

File Sharing isn’t a file server. You need to add an ACL to make it work like that.

chmod -R +a "group:<groupName> allow list,add_file,search,add_subdirectory,delete_child,readattr,writeattr,readextattr,writeextattr,readsecurity,file_inherit,directory_inherit" "Path/to/directory/"

You should create all the users as Sharing Only users and create a group for them.

Regular user accounts have a home folder they don’t likely need, and they have access to everything on that Mac as if they were logged into it.

In the ACL above, Change <groupName> and the /path/to/folder and run it in Terminal.

If you edit the string on a word processor, it might change the double quotes to curly quotes, which won’t work. Change them back to straight quotes.
