Hey John,
yeah thanks for this answer. Thus far, that's what I've found as well. I'm still suspicious of the people I bought my mac from secondhand. Moreover, there appears to be applecare coverage through 2025 but the sellers neither mentioned it nor implied that a transfer was available. This leads me to believe that I could contact apple, they could see if the applecare associated with this machine belonged to someone who either reported it stolen, or could contact them and ask? I suppose contacting them to ask might leave open the door that they could then fraudulently assert a stolen machine but, in either case, it seems that apple as a company would know who the person who had applecare associated with this machine is. rant over. Again, thanks for your input, just a guy tryna do the right thing here.
This is just me ... I will not pester further. But you seem to have reasons to fear.
Step 1: Return the system. If they refuse to take it back, your suspicions have more merit. You may be out money on a system with questionable ownership history. You may want to reinstall CLEAN instead of using the software install on it ... too many possible "agents" hiding.
As to Apple reporting you to the police, I would not be afraid. They may refuse AppleCare if they think they should, but no visits from the police.
Buy your next Mac from a known retailer or Apple directly.
Apple does not maintain a database of stolen equipment.

Contact your local police and ask them if they have a record of your computer being reported stolen. Provide them the serial number.
