Google Meet Connection Issues (MacBook Pro M1-Pro)

I recently bought two MacBook Pros (base model 14" & a custom 14") with the new M1 pro chip. I love many things about these devices, however, I am having a continuous issue when using Google Meet. Every time I use Google Meet during a call, usually 15+ minutes into the call both of my MacBooks says there is a connection issue and automatically kicks me out of the Google meet call. I've tested this on numerous occasions and scenarios, and I've come to the hypothesis that there is something wring with the MacOS which is resulting in me being forced off of multiples. However, I have also tested this on multiple "non-mac devices" such as my Asus and I haven't had a single "connection issue" as I run them simutaneously and separately.

I would really like to keep these MacBook pros, however, I am planning to return them as soon as possible if this issue isn't fixed. Any advice or is anyone else having these issues?

MacBook Pro 14″, macOS 12.0

The strangest thing is, I'm having the same issue. I have the Macbook Pro Max w/ 32GB Ram. In testing I have tried:

1) Multiple Browsers

2) Google Meet Chrome App

3) Multiple Internet connections

4) Tested it w/ a wired Internet connection

Triage leads me down this route, while on calls (you'll need to be using the Chrome App, or Chrome by itself) you can pull the Troubleshooting and Help window up

Keep that up during your calls to check what's happening when both the bandwidth and CPU usage rocket and start to cause issues.

In both options 1, 2 and 3 - I get the same results, no matter what I try.

With me: my calls are functional calls - as in - I'll be on one, and working during it to get conclusions, dig around and end the call when things are working again. Not just a simple meeting. As soon as I start to use other applications that need network traffic of any kind, that's when the trouble starts. This happens regardless of the Internet connection, home, office, coffee shop, tethering - you name it - I've tested it, all tests come down to it being an issue with the M1 Macbook Pro. It doesn't do it on my Intel 16", nor does it do it on my Intel Mac Pro or iMacs I have available to use. It also doesn't seem to happen with Zoom or Skype.

I'm at a loss as trying to explain it seems like over-kill 99% of the time, but if I am doing a call and the only machine I have in front of me is the M1 Macbook Pro - I need to dial in on my phone to ensure I don't get kicked or have everyone else hearing a robotic version of me while I talk.

In option 4 - this issue doesn't exist. Only if I'm on wifi does this issue creep in.

Glad someone else is having this in some ways though - not just me going mad. What's the issue Apple? The wireless network card on these machines not up to it? You know what they say once there are three machines with the same issue.

I am on Google Meet conferences several times a day and have 3 accounts (2 work, 1 personal). Using Safari on MacBook Pro 16" 2021, my meetings started dropping 10-15 minutes in, and would continue to drop if I rejoin. Chrome and Firefox work fine. Safari also flags a warning that each of my Google tabs have reloaded due to using significant energy. Chrome throttles my machine regularly, especially when using Meet, so I turn to Firefox for meetings. If others are having this issue on Safari ONLY, it could be Safari's increased security protocols and/or detecting significant energy use.

Guys, I didn't see anyone mention using Firefox. I know it's become a bit obscure, but I have issues with both Safari and Chrome. I have no issues on Firefox. I am in meetings 4-6 hours a day, mostly on Google Meet. If you connect to meetings using your Apple Calendar, double-click on the event in your calendar. At the top of the event pop-out RIGHT-click where the camera icon and meet.google.com link appear. A menu will fly out. Choose "open link with..." and then Firefox.app.

I am on the latest MacBook Pro 16". Hope this works for you until Google addresses the issue.

I have a MacBook Pro M1, 2020. My issue is that Google Meet continues to lose connection through all my work meetings when I use Chrome. I know this is different from the others who are experiencing this issue with Safari, but wanted to share if others have same issue.

This is probably not optimal, but I did this: Disable Hardware Acceleration.

If you’re using Chrome, open a new tab and enter chrome://settings/system. Then disable hardware acceleration, restart your browser and check if Google Meet is working as intended.

It solved both my connection issue and an issue that I'd given up on 6 months ago: I haven't been able to use my Thunderbolt Display monitor for the video through Google Meet (it would start fine but then would start flashing a red screen every few seconds), but now I can. Two birds, one stone.

I've got this exact issue too. Switching off the camera helps to a certain extent, but what usually happens is that the connection just drops out with no warning.

However, from a suggestion upthread I've installed Chrome, and am now running Google Meet from there. So far it's been absolutely fine. No drop-outs, perfect connection the whole time.

Come on, Apple, get this sorted!

Hello AbuHamdan1410,

Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities! We understand that you've been experiencing connection issues using Google Meets on more than one MacBook Pro.

To help further isolate potential causes, we'd like to collect a few more details about what you're experiencing:

  1. What macOS version are you running?
  2. Which browser are you using for Google Meet? Does the issue occur in another browser?
  3. Are you experiencing connection issues only with this specific website or do you experience the issue with any other video services or apps such as FaceTime?

Take care.

I am having the same problem, but I was also having it with my old MacBook Pro (2019), so I don't know that it has to do specifically with the M1 chip. My suspicion is that it's either a OS issue, or a Google issue through Safari. I wonder if I would have the same problem using Chrome (I think probably not). I would recommend you try using Chrome to see if the problem persists.

Same problem. I don't have any issues with any other platform except for this specific use (Google Meet on Safari). Zoom works great. FaceTime works great. Google Meet works great on Chrome. I really don't like using Chrome and very much prefer Safari, but this is really troublesome at times. I had a good stretch for a while, but the problem resurfaced today. (???). Would love to hear what the deal is.

Hi AbuHamdan1410,

Thanks for getting back to us with the details. While the issue is occurring in multiple browsers, we'd still like to have you try the troubleshooting suggestions outlined here:

If Safari on Mac doesn't open a webpage or isn’t working as expected - Apple Support

If there's no change in behavior after, the next step would be to contact Apple Support for a closer look:

"If you still need help, please contact Apple Support."

Take care.
