Can't login to iMessages on Mac M1 Pro

The first screen that pops up when the Messages app starts is the iCloud login screen. When I enter the correct credentials, the spinner animation appears and keeps spinning forever. When I deliberately enter the wrong credentials it shows an error, so the network call seems to be working fine. When the login process is in progress like this, the only way to close the messages app is to force-quit it.

How can this issue be solved?

iCloud account pass or ID haven't been changed.

The only thing different on this new mac was vs the old one is the main user account password. I chose to setup the new mac from the scratch, manually this time, as I've used the migration process for the last 10 years, and wanted to loose the unneded files and apps that accumulated over the years.

If desktops and documents box was never checked in old Mac , the data personal documents / files was never saved in it , so if you use same Apple ID and password on new Mac , and don't check the desktops and documents box they will not sync .

Check the desktops and documents box in new Mac .

The admin password for two Macs ( user account are always kept different ) .

See the article Set up your MacBook Air - Apple Support

Do you have created a new Apple ID or signing with previous Apple ID How to create a new Apple ID - Apple Support

After that iCloud is set up Set up iCloud on your Mac - Apple Support

You have to turn on iCloud drive , the desktops and documents box is to be checked , the other inbuilt application box are checked , Set up iCloud Drive - Apple Support

Note : to sync documents the old Apple ID account credentials used in old Mac must be reused to sign in new Mac .
