safari keeps reverting my tabs

Safari keeps reverting my tabs. When I open a new tab, it will close the tab after a few seconds. When I close a tab, it will reopen the tab after a few seconds. When a tab is redirected to a new page, there are chances that after a few seconds the tab will go back to the previous page by itself. And when a new tab is finally opened, it will refresh itself once after a few seconds.

This is really annoying and is making safari unusable.

I don't know if this is related to the group functionality and cloud tabs, because I notice this problem when I am using the same tab group on my MacBook Air and my iPad. This problem occurs regularly on MacBook Air because I use it more often.

Is there a solution to this problem? Or is it a bug in safari that hasn't been fixed? I have suffered from this problem since I bought my MacBook Air a few months ago. I have upgraded to the latest software updates but the problem persists.

This seems to be related to icloud syncing tab groups in near realtime. I unchecked "safari" from my icloud features on my macbook and this works around the issue. But now of course, my safari tab group changes are isolated to my macbook only.

There are actually a lot of these issues with icloud magic, where background syncing will screw up what you're doing. My kids doing pencil markups on pdfs on their iPad have cried so many tears over loosing hours of work suddenly. The icloud magic promise is nice on paper, but there are lots of bugs there. It's sad, Apple is loosing its polished appeal there.

I’m having this problem too, and prior to today I never even touched Tab Groups. It hasn’t been super frequent, but for example, one day I opened like half a dozen tabs before leaving for work, and when I opened safari a bit later to look at them, they were gone. Just today I created a tab group for the first time and put a handful of my tabs in it. Less than an hour later the tab group is empty and those tabs are back in the main group. It’s like it keeps reverting back to a previous state. I don’t even know how many tabs I may have lost without realizing. I’m going to try turning off Safari in iCloud Sync and see if that fixes it.

Hi donnyhikari,

Take a look at this post: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/253499130

It sounds as if you are having similar issues. You may want to compare notes with the post originator of that thread to see if y'all can work out what you have in common that is causing this problem.

In that thread, I did not consider the Tab Groups, but that may well be a contributor to the issue.

Love the tab groups feature, but ever since I started using it my tabs have been reverting. Also, if I close Safari and reopen, tab groups revert to an older set. Logging out of my computer and logging back in seems to fix the problem temporarily, but after a while it starts happening again, although with a new set of tabs. I haven't yet been able to determine what triggers it.

On a related note, when this is happening I can't close tab groups—they keep popping back. I may need to move to FireFox or Chrome temporarily, unless just not using tab groups works. I'll try that next, as it would be less disruptive than moving to an entirely new browser.

I've had this problem for a while now, since the introduction of Tab Groups. It seems to always happen when I'm in tab groups, and not when I'm out of tab groups.

I have the same problems as described by the others:

  • I will often type something in the omnibus to search, hit enter — the page will open for a second then close immediately. This will often happen three or four times in a row. (It seems less likely to occur when I type in a URL, as opposed to when typing in a search.)
  • Sometimes when I click on a link on a page, it will open the page for a second then kick me back to the previous page.
  • Sometimes when I close tabs, they reappear of their own accord.

This has been a problem for *so* long. I'm really hoping for a fix, as I don't want to switch browsers. But man, this bug has been around for a long time now ...

I’m having a similar issue on iPhone X, 15.3.1. Not using tab groups but at least two thirds of the time I go into Safari, it reverts my tabs back to pages I had open hours earlier. Not sure why but really annoying - literally just opened all my recipes for the week and seen them disappear three times in a row before my eyes. Crossing my fingers for an update soon as it’s practically unusable.

I have the same issue (iOS), but it doesn’t only happen within tab groups. I started using tab groups recently, and the issue started within them, but believing that to be the issue I moved all my tabs from the group I was using most back to the main set of tabs. Now the main set of tabs is doing it.

I’ve lost all my meal planning too many times and ended up with food but no idea what recipes it was for - I have to switch to chrome.

I’m not sure if what happened to me this morning is the same. My iPhone safari suddenly had a tab group that is very old. Like I had 200 tabs before (I know) and now I have 320 and none of them are what I had before. Also it didn’t see any of the other tab groups from my other devices. So I’ve lost 200 tabs and I have no idea what is going on. But they weren’t just gone, they were replaced witb something super old.
