Dear Everybody,

Recenty I purchased a Macbook Pro 2021. It is my first Mac.

Migration Assistant has downloaded for Mac and Windows PC (version Monterey). Both installed. I have both computers connected on the same network: Macbook with wifi and Windows PC with ethernet cable. I can see on the router's address in the browser that both are visible.

Starting execution of Migration Assistant on Mac. It is searching for Windows PC but don't find anything

Starting execution of Migration Assistant on Windows PC gives almost immediately the error:

"Migration Assistant encounters an error on the preparation of file transfer". Then it stops.

It does not send any information of what is going wrong.

Of course, if Mac can't see Windows PC than Windows PC can't do anything in spite of both connect to the same network.

On the Mac, file sharing is allowed via Preferences.

On the PC, the firewall has stopped in an attempt to make connection.

Probably I am doing something wrong. Is there anybody who can help me solving this problem?

Try connecting the 2 machines using a direct ethernet connection (i.e. without an intervening router or hub). You may need an ethernet adapter if your MacBook only supports USB connections.

You indicate that on the PC the firewall has stopped in an attempt to make a connection. The link provided by ku4hx https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204087 indicates

"f you have issues moving your data ... If your PC is using any firewall software or antivirus software, turn it off. After migration completes, you can turn that software on again."

On the Mac do you have the Firewall turned on in System Preferences>Security & Privacy? If so turn it off.

To you have any firewall set on the PC?

Of course you can also use the tried and true copy & paste method with an external drive.

How much data do you have? If 5GB or less, free space on your iCloud Drive will be sufficient. You can download iCloud for PC and my experience is it works pretty well.

Thank you for your answer.

I read te website you sent me. It does not explain the problems I have with migration assistant.

Of course i can use a cloud both with my mac and my windows pc. Or use a usb. But the transfer between both machines deals with development (sub)files (fortran, c(++), mpi). Its size is less than a few hundreds of MB. The development of the whole code occurs on both machines. It occurs quite often. I have the idea that migration assistant is simpler to use on mac and windows pc in such a situation.

It looks like that migration assistant cannot find the mac. However, migration assistant don't give any information why mac cannot be found. Do you have any information why migration assistant cannot find my mac?

Yes I have turned off both firewalls, on the mac and on the windows pc. Even then migration assistant do not make connection.

Migration assistant on my mac is searching for the windows pc. Migration assistant on windows pc is not even searching for the mac. Unfortunatly migration assistant on windows pc don't inform me wat is going wrong or missing.

If you have any information, please let me know. File transfer with migration assistant seems to me simpler than other methods.

It wasn't offered to address and correct your specific problem, it was all about the proper way to do it.

If you followed the instructions precisely and skipped nothing and still are experiencing problems, you at least know the problem is not procedural but something else. Hardware or software related maybe.

Unless there is a known specific fix for a known specific problem, it's all trial and error to discover what the real problem is.
