Dell S2422HZ monitor with built-in web cam and MacBook Air M1 2020

I recently purchased a Dell 2422HZ 24" monitor with USB 3 cable included to use with my MacBook Air (2020) currently running Big Sur. The image rendition is fine, but I cannot get the external web cam to work. I tried using FT and dropping down the video menu for output and though I can see the monitor, I cannot select it. Also, when I go to settings/preferences, I can select the monitor display to be the main display, but I cannot select the monitor microphones as input. I attached a headset via USB 2 and that worked fine, but the whole reason I purchased the monitor (great deal at Best Buy today!) was so I could use my MacBook Air in clamshell mode and have access to the webcam, mic and speakers of the monitor for work.

This is really annoying. Can anyone help? I tried to find a YouTube video specifically using the S2422HZ with a MacBook Air, and I went to the Dell website, but I am either really tired (quite likely!) or just challenged!

My main question is how do I set it up to use the Sound input and output of the monitor (Went through mirroring, and then Sound as well as Display but everything I tried has not worked.

Really hoping somebody has some help for me, or is this monitor simply not compatible and I should return it?

Thanks so much!

Hello sgbater.

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities and for sharing these details with us. It sounds like you're unable to select or use your external monitor's camera and microphone when connected to your Mac. If so, we'd like to do our best to assist in any way possible. Although your Mac does come with a built-in camera, you should still be able to use an external camera with your Mac. Check out the following resources below:

Use an external camera with Mac - Apple Support

Choose a camera or microphone for FaceTime calls on Mac - Apple Support

You had mentioned when trying to select your camera from the FaceTime drop menu, you're able to see it but you can't select it. If you open Photo Booth, are you able to select your camera without any issues? Have you checked with Dell to see if there are any required firmware updates for your monitor in order for it to properly work with your MacBook Air? If you connect a different camera (if available), does that one work without any issues or does the same thing occur when you're unable to select it?

Also, does restarting your Mac help at all?

Feel free to keep us updated on your results. Cheers.
